Modern Learning Spaces
Connective technologies, mobile devices, and new global learning opportunities are reshaping how, what and where people learn. Conversely, traditional brick and mortar schools are composed of decades-old classrooms designed to support a different type of learning from a different age. So, do our current schools, to maintain relevance and effectiveness, need to rethink how their spaces are used to support learning in a connected world? The answer is yes. In this session, we'll explore exemplars of physical space design and strategies for rethinking how "classrooms" can be rethought to support a more contemporary learning experience.

TRAILS ~ A Project of Kent State University: A Key Assessment Tool for Information Literacy Skills and Evidence-Based Practice.
According to Professor Judy Moreillon, “The current age of accountability requires all educators to be responsible for collecting evidence that demonstrates improved student learning.” She maintains that TRAILS, provides a way for teachers/librarians to collect student “achievement data.” This tool can be used as a benchmark, which will identify “various strengths and weaknesses in students’ information-seeking skills” (Moreillon, 2014). Teacher Librarians and Classroom Teachers can then use the assessment results to co-design information literacy instruction, which will have a ongoing measurable, and very positive impact on student learning outcomes.

Learn how this assessment tool will:
* Positively guide your future instruction and collaboration with classroom teachers.
* Provide the evidence you need, to showcase improved student learning outcomes.
* Empower YOU to lead the way in your school district for improved teaching and student achievement outcomes with evidence-based practice.

Harvard, McGill and Cambridge University Press are a few familiar publisher names that remind us that in addition to teaching, academic institutions disseminate scholarly information and knowledge. In the past only these large well-endowed institutions could afford the infrastructure costs for such a service. The advent of open source digital publishing suites makes it possible for every Internet connected library to provide digital authoring, technical resources for their members. This workshop will show how libraries can become a community authoring haven, where eBooks, school annuals, community history and more can be authored, published, cataloged and promoted for all all the world to read.

1:1 in Your School - How Do You Know It’s Working
With more and more classrooms using some form of a one-to-one technology model, the second most common question is “Does it help students learn? What are common themes from recent research? What are the foundations, essential conditions, and precursors needed for success? What questions can you ask students, teachers, and parents? What items could be included in your Digital Learning Action Plan? A discussion for any stakeholders in a 1:1 program.

Being Creative with Student Interests: go ahead and give yourself permission
Our elementary school decided it was high time to honor the idea of student electives to increase engagement. We jumped in this year (for a little step) with what was dubbed: I Can Hour. Learn how we started it, implemented it for an afternoon in January, and then repeated it with tweaks in the spring (May/June). Google Forms was usually our friend. And then it inspired me to be more creative in the library instigating a mini-maker movement in the midst of our Red Clover Program.

Robots for Everyone! Collaborative Robot Projects
Learn about two collaborative projects that make use of fun codable robots.
— an INTERstate project where students from Vermont, Georgia and Connecticut collaborated learning to code Finch Robots
— an INTRAstate project where students from 40 Vermont schools collaborated training a fleet of robots that traveled around Vermont for Robot Rodeo
Learn the workflow to implement collaborative robot projects in your district or with other schools. What worked well? What would we tweak?
How can your students take part in a collaborative robot project?

We Visited Our National Parks (and never left Norwich, VT!)
Each year our 5th grade students, during Library class, do a detailed study of many of our National Parks. They research, perform skits, dress up, and take the audience on a virtual visit to their park.

This year, using the iPad app, Green Screen by Do Ink (and an inexpensive Green Screen purchased from Amazon) our students took their audience on a virtual tour of their park. They dressed as Rangers and included video and images from their park for a “Green Screen” virtual tour of the park. The movies were then combined with other video clips, audio, and images using iMovie on the iPad and turned into a finished project.

Join us for the “how’s and why’s” of this project plus some suggestions for the many uses of Green Screen technology in elementary classrooms. We will share lots of examples.
